The Dangers of Deep-Frying a Turkey at Home

November 1, 2019 by bill Leave a Comment

Holidays in the South are never complete without a deep-fried Cajun turkey. Drawn in by the promise of delectable, moist, savory turkey meat, deep-frying this classic Thanksgiving staple has grown to become an increasingly popular tradition. However tempting, deep-frying a turkey is not as easy as it sounds, and can actually be a highly lethal activity. If done the wrong way, the turkey can explode, setting your entire house on fire.

Each year, at least 60 injuries, five deaths, over $15-million in property damage, and the devastation of 900 homes are caused by deep-fried turkey accidents. Do you really want to become part of the statistics? In the video below, firefighters discuss just how dangerous it can be. Here’s why:

If that video alone isn’t enough to scare you into letting the pros handle your turkey this year, here are five more dangers of attempting to DIY deep-fry your turkey:

  1. Deep-frying a turkey is a several-day long commitment. Proper thawing time in the refrigerator can take several days, and thawing your turkey on the counter rather than in the fridge can result in salmonella poisoning. Salmonella and flu season do not go well together.
  2. Deep-fat turkey fryers are extremely dangerous because they run a high risk of spilling hot oil, tipping over, and overheating; all of which can lead to burns, fires, and other injuries. If even the tiniest amount of cooking oil from an overfilled pot or partially frozen turkey touches the burner, it can result in a massive fire. At Copeland’s, we always make sure to follow the proper oil displacement procedure.
  3. The lid, sides of the cooking pot, and handles get insanely hot, which can result in harsh burns.
  4. If you don’t have thermostat controls, your deep fryer can overheat the oil to the point of catching fire (this usually happens around 400-425 degrees).
  5. Placing a frozen turkey in a deep fryer full of high-temperature oil can result in enormous flames climbing up to 10 feet high. This is because once the oil boils the water that’s inside of the turkey, it causes massive amounts of steam, forcing the oil to boil over.

These are just a few of the endless reasons why you should let the professionals handle your fried turkey this year. At Copeland’s, we fry our turkeys in peanut oil as a healthy alternative. Have a safe, healthy Thanksgiving this year and let us do the work for you. You can order one of our famous, hot and fresh, deep-fried Cajun turkeys online now and pick it up at a scheduled time that’s convenient for you. Click here to order!

Copeland’s of New Orleans–Atlanta’s ‘Can’t-Miss’ Mardi Gras Celebration

February 1, 2019 by bill Leave a Comment

Mardi Gras 2019 falls on Tuesday, March 5, and nobody has mastered the art of celebrating like Copeland’s of New Orleans Atlanta-area restaurants.

Our guests and friends are invited to both Copeland’s locations (Kennesaw, 1142 Barrett Parkway West and Cumberland, 3101 Cobb Pkwy SE, Suite 220) for the most authentic Mardi Gras celebration in Atlanta. The celebration will begin at 5 P.M., and will fill up quickly, so don’t wait!

“It’s the only authentic New Orleans Mardi Gras event in Atlanta,” says Bill Goudey, President  & CEO of the Atlanta-area Copeland’s stores. “We try to make it feel like you’re in New Orleans when you can’t be!”

For Bill and his Krewe, this is an annual blowout that has grown for 20 years. Year after year, the carnival atmosphere at Copeland’s includes the famous traditional Mardi Gras menu, with items like the crawfish sample platter (seasonal, based on availability)* prepared with three of our favorite items in one platter. It’s served with crawfish etouffée, boiled crawfish and popcorn crawfish to make this an authentic Louisiana taste. In fact, we even have live crawfish shipped in just for this event (if available)!

Our Mardi Gras menu also includes panéed alligator, boiled shrimp, étouffée … Plus the popular variety platters that give you several kinds of shrimp and or crawfish. And of course we’ll have Copeland’s King Cake Cheesecake, served every year as a special dessert.

But Mardi Gras isn’t just about Cajun food. We’ll have live bands playing carnival music in both stores from 6 – 9 P.M.! Guests can listen and dance along while enjoying Mardi Gras Punch and “Crash and Burns” in 16-oz souvenir cups for $6. And of course we’ll have that signature Big Easy drink, the Hurricane, available as well (also $6).

“We encourage people to come in early and hang out and listen to the music,” says Bill. “Staff and guests will join up for impromptu ‘second lines’ (parades), while the band plays renditions of ‘When the Saints go Marching In.’”

“We’ll have beads and giveaways for kids, the big Mardi Gras umbrella, plus we’ll do the same ‘throws’ you get along the parade route in New Orleans,” Bill says. “It’s definitely a festive atmosphere.”

Check out the video showcasing some of the excellent Mardi Gras parties we’ve hosted in the past:

If you don’t know about the history behind Mardi Gras, Copeland’s of New Orleans in Kennesaw and Cumberland are here to help! You see, in Louisiana and other places where Carnival celebrations are a big deal, the parades and parties start with the Epiphany (or King’s Day) and reach their peak on the day before Ash Wednesday.

That day is Mardi Gras, French for “Fat Tuesday”, so-called due to the practice of the last night of eating wonderful, rich foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

Our roots are in New Orleans, where the locals are lucky enough to get the day off work and school for Fat Tuesday. The whole city wants to let the good times roll! We here in the A-T-L don’t get a paid holiday just to eat king cake and line up along parade routes for beads and throws, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun.

Come to Copeland’s of Atlanta—it’s the closest you’ll get to Mardi Gras this year without leaving the Atlanta area!

Celebrate National Cheesecake Day, Monday, July 30th, at Copeland’s!

July 2, 2018 by bill Leave a Comment

We’re celebrating National Cheesecake Day with buy one get one free slices of cheesecake. Stop by Monday, July 30th for lunch, dinner, or just dessert! More than a couple in your crowd? Whole cheesecakes will be $10 off to sweeten your Monday.

What’s better than savoring a bite of our decadent cheesecake? Not having to share your slice of course!

Quick history lesson: Did you know that cheesecakes were once a savory treat? Closer to a bread than a cake, until the 1800s, yeast was used instead of eggs to give cheesecakes their shape and form. The invention of cream cheese in New York in the late 1800s created a dessert craze that eventually (and thankfully!) spread across the nation. Several classics emerged along with a huge variety of cheesecakes that either incorporated chocolates, caramels, fruit, and nuts into the cake or crust, or used them as toppings.

From classics like our Signature Cheesecake, Turtle, or Red Velvet to Cookies and Cream or Black and White Tuxedo, we have a cheesecake to set anyone’s taste buds tingling. If you’re a chocoholic, try a slice of our Killed by Chocolate drizzled in a chocolate fudge brownie topping. If you love our New Orleans flair, check out Al’s Favorite Homemade Creole Style cheesecake. Personalize any slice or cake with one of our eleven choices of caramel, chocolate, or fruit toppings.

If you’re glad this savory dish turned sweet, we hope to see you at Copeland’s July 30th! Got a busy Monday on your calendar? Pop in and pick up an order to go. Either way, we’re discounting whole cheesecakes and doubling the deliciousness of a slice.

Mardi Gras Copeland’s of New Orleans Style

January 23, 2018 by bill Leave a Comment

There are two things most often associated with New Orleans this time of year: Mardi Gras and King Cake. With the many spectacular krewes, parades and balls, the Big Easy does stand out out as one of the more notable celebrations worldwide.

A (Very) Brief History of Mardi Gras

According to History.com, the origins of Mardi Gras date back thousands of years to pagan celebrations of spring and fertility. When Christianity arrived in Rome, in 313 A.D., church leaders decided to combine these traditions into the new faith instead of getting rid of them altogether. (“If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” must have been their mindset.)

As a result, Mardi Gras, considered a season of excess and debauchery, became a prelude to Lent, the 40 days of penance between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Mardi Gras Day (referred to as Fat Tuesday) has a moveable date and can take place anywhere between February 3 to March 9. (This year, it takes place on Tuesday, February 13.)

When Mardi Gras first came to the United States — March 3, 1699 is the first recorded event — it didn’t take long before New Orleans became its epicenter.

Fast forward to today: Whether you prefer the lavishly adorned Fat Tuesday parades like Zulu and Rex or the more modest Elks and Crescent City parades where family and community groups turn flatbed trucks into Carnival floats, you can be sure a good time will be had by all.

Origin of the King Cake

Mardi Gras and King Cake go hand-in-hand, especially in New Orleans. However, its Middle Age origins in Old World France and Spain have it associated with Epiphany. When settlers brought it to the New World along with Catholicism and Christianity, the tradition evolved to include the Mardi Gras season.

Traditionally, a King Cake is an oval-shaped bakery delicacy (sort of a cross between a coffee cake and French pastry) decorated in purple, green and gold. History suggests these colors were chosen to resemble a jeweled crown honoring the Wise Men who visited the Christ Child on Epiphany.

A tiny plastic baby representing the Christ Child is often hidden inside the cake. At a party, when the King Cake is sliced and served, each person looks to see if their piece contains the baby. If so, that person is named “King” for a day and, bound by custom, has to host next year’s party and provide the King Cake.

Mardi Gras at Copeland’s

At our Copeland’s of New Orleans locations in Kennesaw and Atlanta, the annual celebration comes to Georgia in a big way. Mardi Gras carries special meaning here at Copeland’s due to our New Orleans roots. While we obviously can’t host a parade in our parking lot, we can do the next best thing: make you feel as if you’ve been transported to the heart of the Big Easy with a Fat Tuesday celebration that starts at 6 p.m. and doesn’t end until closing time.

We even have our own Copeland’s spin on the traditional King Cake. We adorn our famously decadent cheesecake with Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold to make them as festive as the season.

So, when you think of Mardi Gras this year, we hope Copeland’s comes to mind. If you’re in the Atlanta metro area and your plans don’t include heading to New Orleans, join us on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 13, at either of our locations for our blow-out celebration.

We will “laissez les bons temps rouler” as the French say — “Let the good times roll!”

December 12, 2017 by bill Leave a Comment

It’s not too late to find a holiday party venue. While it’s true that Copeland’s of New Orleans in Atlanta has been booking private rooms for the last couple of months, there are still spots available!

Even though Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are all around the corner, some HR folks and corporate planners are still scrambling to put together a work-friendly event.

We’re also still getting calls from community organizations, families and other groups both small and large. We’re telling them all the same thing: Sure, we’re already well into December, but we’ll work with you to pull a holiday plan together!

Hosting a last-minute holiday party means finding a venue that suits your needs at a price that fits your budget. Our main banquet room — the Mardi Gras room — accommodates up to 70 guests. It features a full A/V system in both stores. We have a second banquet room at our Cumberland location, the French Quarter room, which is themed as a New Orleans Courtyard. This restaurant is great if you’d like to host a dinner party or school/corporate event. I hosted a school social for my SGA during Christmas. The food and service was excellent. I would definitely book here again. (Yelper Dallas E)

Would you prefer to have the party at your place? If it’s too late to book a banquet room for the time and date you wanted, Copeland’s can cater your holiday party.

In fact, we offer delivery, drop off or full service catering for 10-1000 guests. We pride ourselves on making your holiday event worry-free. We serve many of Atlanta’s top 100 companies for everything from small business lunches to large Christmas galas.

Stocking Stuffers for the New Orleans Saints Fan in Your Life

December 12, 2017 by bill Leave a Comment

Being a New Orleans Saints fan in Falcons country isn’t always easy. The oldest rivalry in the NFC South has its enthusiasts on both sides, and none are more passionate than the Saints fans who live, work and play in “enemy territory” here in Atlanta.

If you’re looking for some last-minute stocking stuffers or gifts for that “Who Dat” in your life … And if that special someone on your list is a foodie, too … here are a few ideas for their stockings this Christmas season.

New Orleans Saints Light Up Ice Cubes

Long ago, in days we don’t like to recall, fans of the “Ain’ts” started wearing paper bags over their heads at games. Those days are long gone, thankfully, and fans from New Orleans to Atlanta are proud to call the Saints their own.

There’s no reason for a Saints loyalist to do his or her drinking in the dark this year, but that doesn’t mean a bright addition to their holiday cheer can’t make those long winter nights more fun.

This officially licensed set of four light-up cubes are reusable, you can stick ‘em in the freezer to get them to, well, freeze, and they last up to 300 hours. Of course, you can turn them off between games, when you’re no doubt drinking less interesting beverages.

Copeland’s Atlanta Gift Cards

Example of customizable Copeland’s Atlanta gift cards

Christmas is fast approaching, so you may not have time to order anything online and wait for shipping. Here’s a stocking stuffer that you can get right away!.

Since 1983, Copeland’s of New Orleans restaurants have combined New Orleans flavor and comfort with an upscale sensibility that that embodies the heart and soul of Southern Louisiana. And with two locations in Atlanta, a gift card makes a great gift for any Cajun-cuisine-loving fan who finds himself or herself in Georgia.

Copeland’s has great menu items for everyone, including flavorful takes on seafood, pasta, salads, steaks and desserts. And for a limited time, you can get a $25 value gift card for free when you purchase a $100 card for a friend. Because while it’s better to give than receive, it’s never wrong to get a little something for yourself, too, right?

You can order a Copeland’s Atlanta gift card online or in-store at 1142 Barrett Pkwy NW in Kennesaw 3101 Cobb Pkwy, Suite 220 in Cumberland. Your recipient can even check their gift card balance online if they’ve used it once and want to use a remaining balance on a return trip. The cards are valid at all participating Copeland’s of New Orleans, Cheesecake Bistro by Copeland’s, Batch 13 Biscuits & Bowls and Copeland’s MKT locations.

Tony Chachere’s Original Creole Seasoning

Don’t have time to head to Copeland’s? The Saints fan on your list can get authentic Cajun flavor at home thanks to Tony Chachere’s Original Creole Seasoning. Tony was a man who knew how to cook.

His Creole seasoning is a great addition to gumbo, jambalaya, etoufees, gravies and roux. It’s good on just about any meat, particularly stuffed chickens, smoked sausage and boudin. It’s got a little heat and a salty bite, but this stuff will make your salt and pepper shakers obsolete.

Since it’s football season, why not up your snack game by adding it to nachos, popcorn, hot wings and beer nuts?

Fleur de Lis Oreo Cookie Molds

Like Oreos? Who doesn’t!

Like the Saints? Even better. Now you can make your own chocolate-covered Oreos with this fleur-de-lis cookie mold. The fleur-de-lis (in case you missed it) is a stylized lily common for hundreds of years in military and Catholic symbolism and often associated with Louisiana and Cajun culture.Just fill the molds 1/3 full with melted chocolate, drop in your favorite cookie, then top off with more chocolate.  Chill in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes, and they’re ready to serve. Chocolate-covered Oreos are easy to make, and with the wide selection of Oreo flavors available these days you can mix it up and make it fun.

Know of any other great gift ideas for Saints fans? Hop over to our Facebook page and post on our wall. Here at Copeland’s Atlanta restaurants, we’re all about good food, friends and fun, and we’d love to hear from you!

Finally, if you’re a Saints fan in Atlanta — or if you know one — we invite you to don the old gold, black and white and join us on game day when our Cumberland location is packed with “Whodats” watching the action on the giant flat-screens over the bar. It gets pretty crowded (especially when the Saints are playing the Falcons), but there’s always room for a few more. So come early, get a good table and join us for the game.
